King of Thorn

Finished the manga turned movie King of Thorn a few weeks ago and I have to say that while it was pretty cookie cutter for a sci-fi horror movie it was really good.  I enjoyed the movie and really liked the twist ending.  If you read the manga you'll be surprised by the movie as it deviates significantly from the manga.  I only found this out later after reading the wiki link to gather information for this post.   If M Night Shamalongadingdang did anime movies King of Thorn would be pretty close to one of his movies.

King of Thorn starts off with a nice little scene of New York City until a young lady comes crashing down out of the sky.  When the camera cuts back to the fallen lady you discover her body had turned to stone and was smashed to pieces on impact.

From there we are given an overload of infotainment describing and following the movements of the disease that caused the woman's condition.  That disease is known as the Medusa Virus and it is affecting everyone on the Planet.  Enter the cult Venus Gate who says they will be excepting 160 chosen people to enter a deep sleep while they work on creating a cure for the disease.  Of course whats a good cult without a hidden agenda or something evil lurking in the background.

Those 160 people were chosen and taken to a castle in Scotland to undergo a cold sleep that should last for a while.  It's when the patients wake up that they find the world hasn't faired as well as they had hoped and wonder why there are giant thorns running through the facility.  The thorns are of course the least of their problems.  As it turns out living inside the thorns are giant mutant bats that wake up and feast on the people who have just woken up.  Mass chaos erupts when the bats attack and all but a handful of generic sci-fi characters live through the first attack and are the main characters that will play who dies next the rest of the movie.

The seven remaining characters are your typical military man, old dude, nerd dude, milf, little boy, generic black guy and the all important teenage girl with issues. It's the teenage girl who is the most important character of the movie outside of the evil that lurks behind the scenes but if I told you about that than it would ruin the twist.  The teenage girl is Kasumi Ishiki and she has a twin Shizuku which Kasumi is totally dependant on.  The cast of characters begin their journey out of the monster infested castle and look for clues as to find out what has happened since they were asleep.

Soon they discover that they were only asleep for a short time (48 hrs) before the Medusa Virus takes over the castle.  From that point the group begins to fight their way out of the castle.  As the only really important person to the story is Kasumi and her protector many of the generic extras die off in generic sci-fi horror fashion.

It doesn't take long before the whole story is unraveled before the audience and you find out the Medusa Virus is a mutation from space that was unleashed by a young girl named Alice who was patient Zero and Venus Gate was using Alice to study the way that the Medusa Virus is able to turn dreams into reality.  The remaining cast of characters are able to make it out of the castle that has been able to turn into a dragon like creature made up of thorns.  However Kasumi discovers that her twin sister was taken into the castle after an accident that happened before the people were placed into the sleep chambers.

That's when the twist happens and I'm not going to tell you what happens you'll just have to watch the movie for yourself to see what happens.  I thought it was pretty good for a sci-fi horror movie and enjoyed it.  I'd definitely watch it again when it gets a domestic release (if it ever does)
