The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya movie has been out for some time as a fansub and it's been sitting on my computer since it was released but because the movie is really long (almost three hours) and I had so many other things on my anime plate at the time I just couldn't find any time to watch it until last weekend at the latest MoNAC meetup.  And like I mentioned in my weekly review blog post I really did enjoy the movie but I don't think I missed anything by watching it this late.

I remember all the crazy commotion that was going on when the movie was first released and I just largely ignored it and moved on with things myself so for me the movie was a complete surprise and what a surprise.  I really didn't see it coming until it was right there in front of me.  Then I had to laugh and say yup that's definitely Haruhi Suzumiya for you.

The story starts in the middle of December and Haruhi is up to same more antics volunteering the gang for a School based Christmas party with lots of decorations an always cute outfit for Mikuru and the decision to make a hot pot in the club room.  A couple days later after Kyon is sent on a shopping trip to get more decorations for the club room he his heading to school and soon discovers that something is just not right.

Once in class he is reintroduced to Ryoko Asakura what's even worse is that both Haruhi and Itsuki Koizumi are missing and Mikuru doesn't know who he is.  This really distresses Kyon a lot and he runs to the only place that he thinks will make since the club room and finally he is able to find something familiar.  That is Yuki sitting in the same spot that he first saw her and she's reading a book.  The club room is still just the Literature club room and Yuki is still the only member.  There's also two other problems.  She's only a normal girl and for some reason there is now a computer in the club room.

The computer is important.  Kyon goes a bit nuts trying to figure out what exactly has gone wrong with his life and remembers something important that was left in one of the books on the shelf.  A clue from the old Alien Yuki to gather some keys.  With this Kyon runs off to figure out the clue.  The clue turn out to be that Haruhi and Itsuki are still around they are just in a different school and Kyon is able to find them and convince them that something isn't right by mentioning he name John Smith.

Kyon and the gang are all gathered again in the club room and that is the key to turn on the emergancy escape program that Yuki left Kyon.  The only thing is that Yuki gives Kyon the choice to stay in the ideal world with out a crazy powerful Haruhi or to go back to the old way.  For Kyon it's an easy pick and he returns to the original world.  Only he's back to three years ago again and runs into another future Mikuru who explains more about what is going on and they learn that there is one person responsible and that they will need to travel back to December 18 and inject the person responsible with a cure.

Now this is where it goes a bit weird, the person responsible for all of this is Yuki herself who is having some problems thanks to her emotions getting the better of her and she decides that she wasn't to fix it all and creates the second time line.  Kyon goes to inject Yuki only to be stopped by non other than Ryoko Asakura who this time manages to stab Kyon in the back.  Up to this point questions were getting answered and things were going smoothly then Kyon gets stabbed and all hell breaks loose.  Young and old Mikuru rush to his aid and another figure appears to take care of the situation and Kyon silently closes his eyes.

He awakens in a private hospital room and finds out that he's there because he took a tumble down the stairs after the first meeting and has been unconscious for some time.  Thankfully everything is back to normal at this point but one last thing has to be added and that is that Haruhi thought she saw the flutter of a skirt after Kyon fell down the stairs.

And with that it's the end of the movie.  I actually left a lot of good stuff out because hello it's a freaking long ass movie and you'll just have to watch it yourself.  The good news of course is that the movie has been licensed for a US release (don't know when though) in the summer.  Until then you can watch the trailer....
