Rio: Rainbow Gate!

Just finished Rio: Rainbow Gate! this last week and while it's easy to say this was a fanservice guilty pleasure series it did have it's moments that allowed it to climb slightly above that. Not by much though. Still I enjoyed watching it but if you don't care for girls in skimpy clothing all the time then yeah this definitely wouldn't be an anime series for you.

The main character of this series is of course Rio Rollins the "Goddess of Victory" who works as a Casino dealer at the Howard Resort Hotel.  If you're wondering where Rio comes from well that's an interesting story.  She started life as the idol for her own line of Pachinko machines and from there she was soon illustrated in various doujinshi books where a good part of her popularity has come from.

Because of this the anime series doesn't have much of a history to fall back on.  This might have actually been a good thing as it allowed the anime to take on it's own life.  The story starts as Rio is introduced as the Howard Resort's most important dealer and mascot.  Soon enough though one of the real plots of story is introduced as the gate battles.  There are 13 gate cards that are held by only the strongest dealers in the world.  Rio holds two and soon enough more dealers start to show up to challenge her for her gate cards.

As the battles are held in the state of the art Howard Resort Hotel these are anything but normal battles.  Some are somewhat casino related and others are things like a water slide race and type of duck hunt game.  Dumb yes, entertaining for the most part.  Most of the battles are just more cause for eye candy.  It's not until Cartia the Aunt of Rina, Rio's childhood friend who has a plain to take over the Howard Resort Hotel and claim the ultimate prize when Rina wins the gate battles and becomes the MVCD and is shown the ultimate Rainbow Gate.

The story really picks up when Cartia takes control of the floating casino and forces Rio into a none stop Gate Battle ending with a battle with Rina who is looking to kick Rio's butt for revenge.  Rio loses and with it the Howard Resort falls into Cartia's hands.  But Rio can't be held down and she crawls her way back up to the top learning a bit more about her self and her Roll Ruler powers to once again Challenge Rina for one last battle.

Rio wins but not before a hard fought battle against Rina to claim all 13 gates to become the MCVD and gain access to the ultimate Rainbow gate that allows her one wish.  What does she wish for but some good stuff.  Cartia is of course just a little miffed and her plains are spoiled and things work out for everyone yeah.

It's not the best anime series but it's not terrible either.  You can sit down watch this have a few laughs enjoy the eye candy and have a good time.  It's not mind shattering or changing the world of anime but hell there are worst things to watch.  If you're bored and want a little something something you can check out her naughty bits on Sankaku Channel.
