Once a year it seems Japan will release a truly great animated movie that will make it to DVD before the typically slow release schedule of close to a year. So it surprised me when I saw the subbed release of Welcome to the Space Show (Uchuu Show e Youkoso) that I really thought it was another hoax but sure enough it was legit and what a great show it was indeed.
I really thought it would take much longer for this movie to be available on subs but sure enough it brought a bright spot to the gloomy weather that we were beaten with in the last part of winter. Welcome to the Space Show is another great animated movie that will easily replace the typical Miyazaki films which in my opinion have come to lack in their quality. Welcome to the Space Show can easily rank up with Summer Wars for fun light animated film enjoyment with stunning graphics and a great story.
The great thing about the show is that it does have a great story that everyone in the family will enjoy and that makes this a very good family movie that I'd absolutely recommend to people for a movie night even if they are not much for Animated movies. They'll just have to wait for the dubbed movie which hopefully isn't that far behind.
The story goes as such... Five grade school children who are attending a summer camp at their school for a week discover a wounded dog in the middle of a crop circle. They take him back to their school to patch him up. It turns out that the dog is no ordinary dog but an alien from another planet and to show his thanks for the children's help he takes them on a trip to the moon.
Not the ordinary moon that we know but the dark side of the moon that isn't just the moon but a way station for aliens. It's on the moon as the children get to explore the many interesting stores and shops at the way station that we find out the dog...named Pochi is an explorer that discovered someone trying to traffic in a black market and rare item. His report about the activity leads to the Earth being off limits to aliens stranding the kids on the moon's Way Station.
This doesn't set so well with the kids and Pochi tells them if they can get enough money they can take a space trip to his home world and find another way back to Earth and they'll be able to get back home in time to not be missed. That sets off the real adventure as the kids set off to make some money to fund their way to Pochi's home world. In the mean time the bad guys find out that one of the children is carrying with them some of that black market item and they set off to steal it from them.
Many adventures later the kids are back on Pochi's home world and things are going great until the item is stolen and one of the younger children are kidnapped. Setting off even more adventures as Pochi and the kids set off to rescue their friend and get home in time.
Of course everything works out because this isn't one of those gloomy animated movies. No one dies, everything is cleared up and the kids get home in time with all their limbs attached and many friendships are made along the way. I really don't want to give to much away as I want you to watch the movie yourself.
