Also known as the Mini-gun or Gatling gun I wanted to do Shooter Saturday on something just out there and cool and picked the baddest mother fing gun possible. The Dillon Aero M134 is an updated and modernized version of the older GE GAU-2B/M134D. Dillon Aero also offers a modernization package for updating the older GE units. Many people are familiar with the Mini-gun as a single person hand-held weapon thanks Film and video games.
However those are all fake and heavily modified weapons that would never work as a practical weapon platform for several reasons chief among them the recoil that would be generated when firing the weapon. No one would be able to hold onto a seriously heavy weapon while being fired. So sorry you can't have a single person functional Mini-gun of your own like in Predator or Terminator 2. Well actually unless you're in some form of heavy security or military group you pretty much can't have even a mounted one for that matter either. There are a few older GE pre-ban mini-guns in civilian hands but good luck on buying one from it's current owner. I couldn't even imagine the asking price for one of those. If a current M134 is at the high end $75k and usually pre-ban legal select fire weapons tend to go for 3 times the amount well you can see the problem there.
So why even bother blogging about them then? Well lets face it just because you can't buy one doesn't mean you can't like them and watch videos and find them at some shooting events here and there for demos. That's more than likely were you'll be able to find one and maybe get a chance to man handle one. Plus they're just bad ass.
The M134 is a very capable and versatile weapon system. It can be mounted to just about anything from a fixed position on aircraft to a crew served platform on, helicopters, naval ships and army field vehicles. In addition they have also been sold to private security forces and mounted on SUVs with either remote controls or crew served. The M134 is a six barreled, electrically driven machine gun chambered in 7.62mm NATO and fires at a fixed rate of 3,000 shots per minute. Gatling Guns typically feed from a 3,000 or 4,400 round magazine. With the addition of holo sights, night vision optics and other aiming devices the weapon can be a very accurate and reliable weapon to suppress infantry and take down light aircraft or vehicles. All I know is that I'd like to get my hands on one at a demo and unleash a few thousand rounds at something that will go boom.
There are several cool videos to look at on YouTube and here's just one of them.
