A wonderful good time was had by all at last weekend's Autocross event with a bunch of Noobs (Novice drivers many out for their first time) a huge empty airport parking lot and some oh so not fun fall Idaho weather. The first ever autocross event held in Hailey ID had a huge turn out of drivers from all over Idaho to experience one of the largest and fastest courses of the season.
Other than the weather (hey it is fall after all) this was one of the better autocross events of year that I've been to and it was a lot of fun going mind you if I could have done anything different I would have brought some warm thin gloves so that I wouldn't freeze my fingers while filming. Also need to remember handwarmers to keep the batteries warm so that they don't crap out earlier than they normally would. Those are just some good mental notes for me next time because it definitely seems like there will be a next time as this event was a "lets see how it all goes and if it's good you guys can come back next year" event and from the sounds of it the airport people were sold on the idea for more events.
The event itself had a huge turn out of drivers with a showing of 32 Novice drivers with something close to 75 total cars. There was a wide range of cars out there this time with a few old school muscle cars including an old Triumph which looked like it would roll over any minute in the corners and an even older Ford Hotrod. There were a few slow cars out there but the majority of the people went for it and it looked like everyone was having a good time. I was pretty happy since there was a larger turnout of Porsches than Corvettes which is different than most autocross event where it's normally the other way around.
The course layout was done by three people each person had a section and you would think that with a setup like that it wouldn't flow all that well but somehow it just all worked out and made for a fun fast course layout that seemed to flow well and keep the drivers engaged in the action. It was nice to be able to use a large airport airplane parking lot that was flat and minus any obstacles in the way. Made for an easy time of filming as well not having to worry about any light poles in the way or needing to shoot around.
I definitely had a wonderful and fun time even with the frozen fingers shooting video and pictures while I was there and would definitely like to go back again hopefully when it's a bit nicer weather it would look gorgeous with a nice sunny day I'm sure. On a side note since we were right next to the airport's main runway I did try to take a couple pictures of the jets landing and taking off didn't work out so well but you can check out all the pictures in this flickr set and you can find all the videos on YouTube.
Here's a little preview
