Love Giant Robots? Love heavy metal rock and roll? Love series sci-fi action, gory violence and sexy chicks? Well than Mazinkaiser SKL is definitely your cup of tea for an anime OVA series. It has all of that in a short 3 part OVA package and is probably one of the better big robo series that I've seen in a while.
It doesn't hold a candle to my all time favorite big robo franchise Gurren Lagann but it does a good job of kicking ass taking names and running off with the hot dame at the end. Mazinkaiser SKL is actually part of a much larger big robo franchise that I haven't seen any bit of so I went into this with no idea what I was getting into or a preconceived notion of how it was supposed to be. That is a good thing and a bad thing.
Going into it I thought OK this will have some good action stuff and more than likely a bunch of macho stupidity but I was going to give it a shot. What I got was awesome sure there is a way to healthy amount of machismo flung about but not in a way to be a negative impact. It actually takes you back to an older school of anime thought were guys were guys and they step on any thing in the way to get what they wanted. Add in a rocking sound track and some nice T&A in the form a all female army with female robots it actually turned out pretty dang good.
The plot for Mazinkaiser SKL is that on an isolated prison island occupied by three warring factions something has gone wrong with the gravity curtain (the means to keep people both in and out of the island) and is about to destroy not only the island but most of the planet as well. A team of soldiers and engineers are sent into the prison island to fix the gravity curtain before it all goes wrong. But from the start it all goes wrong and all save for one engineer everyone on the team dies on entry to the island.
The second team is there already and is the giant robot Mazinkaiser SKL piloted by two brash and violent men who each take turns piloting the Robot with their special skills. Ken handles the blade work while Ryo handles the duel pistol blasting work. Together they take on the two of the factions while the sole remaining engineer Tsubasa pilots another female mecha in a support role and works with the female army side to figure out how to fix the gravity curtain.
Lots of gory mecha battles ensue but I don't remember seeing any of the females receiving the same amount of gory blood letting that the male counterparts are treated to. Which I think is a good thing honestly. Not that the ladies didn't get banged up and killed it's just you didn't get as gory a look at it.
Masinkaiser SKL battles the two main bad guys kicks some ass and gets his own ass kicked until all the knock down drag out fighting gets taken care of and the find out that the key to fixing the gravity curtain lays with the destruction of the second big bad guy mecha the Iron Kaiser. The good guys kick the bad guys up and down the island and some how manage to fix everything and leaves the heros left to fight another day.
I would like to see this licensed in the states as it's one of those bad ass series that would work well in the states but so far I haven't heard anything on the grape vine about that happening. Until then check out the trailers
