Looks like I'm getting to the end of a handful of the summer anime season series and one of those I just finished was the second season of Strike Witches. The ladies with magic powers and no pants were back for another season of battling the Alien Neuroi with machine guns and striker units along with a handful of hijinks. If you liked the first season you'll absolutely love the second if the thought of girls running around in swimsuits and panties all day long is revolting you'll absolutely hate it. I'm in the love it camp myself.
The first season of Strike Witches ended with the girls going off in their own directions after a humanoid Neuroi made an appearance at the end. The second season starts with an even larger Neuroi cluster wiping out the smaller hive with the humanoid Neuroi. Soon the witches of the 501st Strike Witches unit are gathered all together again to combat the even larger Neuroi forces this time stationed out of the fake country of Romanga (Italy). Little has changed from the first season. The girls get called out to fight invading Neuroi and make quick work of them like usual. This time around though we get a little more plot and a few more side characters. Also the first jet striker unit shows up and promptly causes problems. The first season the girl spent a lot of time in the closed off spa the second season the girls make their own hot spring open air bath where they once again spend a lot of time frolicking about.
The main parts of this season is Mio Sakamoto's declining witch powers and I don't want to spoil any thing for you so I'll leave it at she's trying to learn the ultimate strike with her new Katana named Reppumaru that could destroy Neuroi in one strike. The second main point is the military's development of a hybrid Neuroi battleship that is able to convert the largest battleship in their fleet to a controlled Neuroi ship able to destroy the core. Lots of stuff happens with that but I can tell you the story ends happily with the destruction of the massive Neuroi Hive and once again the witches of the 501st disbanding again hopefully for the last time.
This season just seemed a lot shorter than the first season as it was mostly episodic and wasn't all about fighting the Neuroi or trying to figure out the Neuroi. This season was all about the witches. And I really enjoyed it. Thankfully FUNimation has licensed this season as well for release in the states and had it streaming for a while on their video pages. Crunchyroll also had it streaming as well. I'm not sure if it's still there or not. I'll be waiting for the DVD's though.
