Mecha goodness this summer came by way of a six part movie series for the Manga Break Blade. The first movie was released on DVD not to long ago and I'm only now getting to the my little review of the movie. Just like with the movie release of Kara no Kyoukai I'll be cover each individual movie as they are released. And after the first movie I'm just as excited as I was for the Kara no Kyoukai movies.
Each of the movies will be based on one of the first six graphic novels of the series and the first movie is the basic introductory story that introduces the watcher to the world that uses Quartz to do everything. It's like magic based on the ability to use crystals. The world is at war and there are two kingdoms in a fight. Of course this being a very typical Mecha series there is of course one poor sap out there who's unable to use the quartz and a huge powerful Mecha that doesn't work for any one other than said none quartz user.
So the guy who up until now was simply a worthless guy is now the most pivotal person in the series. Pretty typical Mecha fair up to that point. It gets a bit more interesting when we find out how everyone is involved in the series. The unfortunate un-sorcerer turns out to be good friends with the current King and Queen of one country and also friends with the commander of the invading force out to take over the kingdom. He's forced into the middle of the fight thanks to his ability to control the mega mecha and his desire to find his friend and stop them from fighting. Also it looks like the King and Queen are not in a happily after ever marriage which I'm sure will cause some conflict later on as it looks like the Queen might also have a thing for the poor un-sorcerer.
Their pasts will catch up with them, blood will be shed and things will happen. The Mecha fighting looks awesome already (minus the whole square bullets made of hardened quartz thing that I just laughed about) and only an ever so slight bit of fanservice round out this rather typical but still fun to watch Mecha movie. I'm very much looking forward to the next one which should be released here soonish. Also it doesn't hurt at all that it's a Production I.G. and XEBEC production.
