From Guatemala: The Reality of Living on $1 a Day

Around the world, one out of every six human beings lives in extreme poverty, struggling to survive on about one $1 a day or less. The majority of those people are women. What is living on a dollar a day really like? This Fall, Ritu Sharma, President and Co-founder of Women Thrive Worldwide, traveled to Guatemala, one of the poorest countries in Central America, to find out. For four days, she lived in the municipality (county) of Tactic in the area of Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, a lush and mountainous region that contains some of the most desperate poverty in Latin America. She wore the same clothes, ate only what one dollar would buy her, and spent as much time as possible with three incredible Mayan women—Margarita, Dorotea, and Eluvia—who live on a dollar or less every day of their lives. Ayumi Kinoshita (木下 あゆ美 Kinoshita Ayumi, born in December 13 .She is a Japanese Actress and model. She appeared in many Japanese commercials as well as taking the role of Jasmine/DekaYellow in Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger. She also is involved in Guilty Gear franchising, such as having a video tutorial. Along with Mika Kikuchi, she sings the second ending theme of Dekaranger titled "Girls in Trouble!". In addition, the lyrics of Jasmine's character theme "Hard Rain" were written by Kinoshita. She has also appeared in small videos in the Solid Eye Theatre of Metal Gear Acid 2 and as the voice of Setia in Dragon Quest Swords

Kinoshita's most recent work is the film "Master of Thunder" (マスターオブサンダー), an action film where she stars as one of the seven pupils of a martial artist.

Prospect of a nuclear conflict in the Middle East is raised by senior diplomat and member of the Saudi ruling family

A senior Saudi Arabian diplomat and member of the ruling royal family has raised the spectre of nuclear conflict in the Middle East if Iran comes close to developing a nuclear weapon. Prince Turki al-Faisal, a former Saudi intelligence chief and ambassador to Washington, warned senior Nato military officials that the existence of such a device "would compel Saudi Arabia … to pursue policies which could lead to untold and possibly dramatic consequences".

Trailblazer Hawkins targets US playgrounds

In the big book of the US national team, Eddie Hawkins represents a footnote. However, in a country that has a complicated history with the game, not to mention with race and class, the now 49-year-old is a prime example of how love for the sport can burn bright even through dark times. The first US-born African-American player to appear for the Stars and Stripes, Hawkins won just the one cap, in 1984, and was one of many domestic talents of his era who fell through the cracks. Having grown up in a soccer hotbed north of New York City, Hawkins played in the respected Cosmopolitan League, and he was drafted into the star-studded NASL as a 17-year-old by the Washington Diplomats. He turned down the chance to line-up next to Johan Cruyff and Co, choosing university instead, but Hawkins excelled as a collegiate player and was a regular in the national team camps of the time...[continued]

Apple iOS beats Google Android on security, says research

Apple’s iOS mobile operating system is overall more secure against hackers and other online threats than its main rival, Google’s Android, according to research.

It is more resistant to three out of five types of threats including malware and data loss, the security firm Symantec said. On the other two categories, web-based attacks and social engineering attacks, the two operating systems came out even. The security features of Apple’s software, which powers the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, are also better implemented than those of Android, Symantec said.
